Updated: Jul 13

As we settle into winter here at our family-run facility in Paola, Kansas, keeping our horses healthy and comfortable becomes an around-the-clock commitment. Living on-site allows us to provide constant care through even the harshest winter conditions. Here's how we ensure your horses thrive during the cold Kansas months.

Feeding for Winter Warmth:

During winter months, we switch to our twice-daily feeding schedule. This isn't just about nutrition - it's about maintaining body heat. Our horses receive carefully portioned meals in the morning and evening, with our dry lot horses having constant access to quality bromhay. We've found this 24/7 hay access is crucial, as the digestion process helps horses generate body heat during those frigid Kansas nights.

Water Management: Breaking the Ice

One of the biggest winter challenges is keeping water sources accessible. At Lakeside Stables we do have heaters in the water tanks. But during those super cold spell’s we don't just check water - we're out there multiple times throughout the day ensuring there is not ice. Every horse has constant access to fresh water. Dehydration can be just as dangerous in winter as summer, and we take this seriously. We even put out salt blocks on the winter because it encourages the horses to drink.

We do what we can, how we can and best we can in the harsh winters in Kansas.
